Possible issues with a DSG or S-tronic transmission:

The DSG or S-tronic transmission is a complex system designed for added comfort. Like most car components, the DSG or S-tronic transmission is prone to wear and potential defects. When it fails to function properly, you may encounter issues such as:

  • DSG or S-tronic transmission jerks.
  • DSG or S-tronic clutch slips.
  • DSG or S-tronic transmission makes strange noises.
  • DSG or S-tronic transmission vibrates.
  • DSG or S-tronic slips out of gear.
  • DSG or S-tronic temperature sensor malfunction.
  • The reverse gear of the DSG or S-tronic does not work.
  • DSG or S-tronic transmission only shifts into even gears.
  • DSG or S-tronic transmission only shifts into odd gears.
  • DSG or S-tronic transmission does not shift beyond 3rd or 4th gear.
  • DSG or S-tronic transmission is stuck in one gear.
  • DSG or S-tronic transmission engages gears harshly.
  • DSG or S-tronic transmission basic settings incomplete.
  • DSG or S-tronic transmission has error code P2711, indicating an implausible shift sequence.
  • DSG or S-tronic transmission hums and vibrates while accelerating gently with a cold engine.

The DSG (Double Shift Gear) transmission is considered one of the best automatic transmissions currently available. With its dual-clutch design, the DSG combines the sportiness and fuel efficiency of a manual gearbox with the comfort of an automatic. However, a significant drawback is that the DSG is not a custom-tailored product and often suffers from issues like vibrations and unwanted downshifts during acceleration. Are you looking for a lasting solution? We are here to help you solve these problems.

Which VAG DSG/S-tronic transmissions do we adjust?

The DSG or S-tronic transmissions we customize through software include:

  • DQ200 7-speed gearbox with dry clutch (including MQB).
  • DQ250 6-speed gearbox with wet clutch (including MQB).
  • DQ500 7-speed gearbox with wet clutch (including MQB).
  • DL501 7-speed gearbox with electro-hydraulically controlled dual clutch.
  • DL382 7-speed gearbox with electro-hydraulically controlled dual clutch (including MQB).
  • DQ400e 6-speed gearbox with wet clutch (including MQB).
  • DQ200e 7-speed gearbox with dry clutch (including MQB).
  • DQ511 10-speed gearbox with wet clutch (upcoming).
  • DQ380 7-speed gearbox with wet clutch (upcoming).

DSG or S-tronic 'Stage One' tuning:

The basic tuning (Stage 1) includes increasing the torque limiter in the DSG software and raising the shift pressure. We also disable the 'kickdown' feature in manual mode. When the accelerator is pressed, the DSG often downshifts unnecessarily before accelerating. For diesel vehicles with high torque, this is unnecessary and even undesirable, as it is better to stay in the same gear. Surprisingly, in the original DSG software, the kickdown feature activates even when manual mode is selected. Additionally, the transmission will automatically upshift at a preset RPM limit. By modifying the DSG software, the transmission will hold the engine limiter in manual mode without upshifting. This makes the car ideal for those who enjoy raw speed, whether on the racetrack or the German Autobahn.

Maximum RPM:

But that’s not all. We also remove the automatic upshifting at maximum RPM. For petrol engines, we increase the maximum RPM, while for diesel engines, we lower it. Why? Simple. The original DSG software configuration shifts at 6,800 rpm, which is fine for standard cars, but vehicles with larger turbos may benefit from a higher RPM limit. Therefore, we offer the option to increase it. For diesel engines, the transmission typically shifts between 4,800 and 5,000 rpm, but their maximum power is usually around 4,000 rpm. Lowering the RPM limit helps optimize the power band, resulting in better driving performance, improved fuel efficiency, and a smoother overall experience.

Issues with the DSG or S-tronic transmission:

  • Vibrations during shifting:
When the car vibrates during acceleration or while shifting from 1st to 2nd gear, the DSG transmission may have internal damage. We can reduce, fix, and prevent this problem through software adjustments.
  • Engine hesitation:
If the car is slow to respond when accelerating from low speeds, it may cause sudden jerking when the automatic downshifts. This problem is often related to clutch wear, which we can fix through software optimization, resulting in smoother acceleration.
  • Low RPM vibrations:
Some DSG software versions shift into 7th gear at about 58 km/h (1,200 rpm), causing vibrations under light acceleration. We can adjust the RPM threshold to prevent these vibrations by setting higher shift points.
  • Overly aggressive sport mode:
For many drivers, the "S" program is too aggressive, resulting in excessive engine noise and higher fuel consumption due to early downshifts. We can modify the sport program to make it more suitable for city driving or dynamic performance.
  • Unwanted kickdown:
When the accelerator is pressed, the DSG unnecessarily downshifts before accelerating. For high-torque diesel vehicles, it’s better to stay in the current gear. This common issue can be resolved through software optimization.

Benefits and the ultimate solution with DSG or S-tronic tuning:

We offer several options per transmission to optimize the DSG or S-tronic. These include customizing the D + S program, adjusting the RPM limit, and reducing unwanted downshifts.

  • Increasing torque
  • Removing torque limiter
  • Improving shift time (± 20ms)
  • Raising maximum shift RPM
  • Adjusting Launch Control RPM
